Page Springs Important Bird Area

Northern Arizona Audubon has an opportunity to create a visitor center at Page Springs Fish Hatchery.

NAAS volunteers have been working very hard on this site for several years. Our partnership with AZ Game & Fish has earned us the opportunity to re-focus the existing visitor building on birds and Important Bird Areas.

With your support we can provide;

  • birdwalks
  • loaner binoculars and field guides for self-guided tours
  • educational displays on local birds
  • information on local conservation initiatives
  • and much more

BUT, there is no point in building a vistor center unless people are there to welcome and inform visitors! We need YOU.

We will make it fun and easy to volunteer and experience the 'warm fuzzies' that come from seeing your work result in tangible benefits for your fellow residents. Helping connect people with nature is a great way you can give back to the adults and children of your community.

Without you, this will NOT happen. NAAS has only a short time to commit to the project or walk away from a gernational opportunity.
We need volunteers to;

  • Meet and greet for a few hours on a regular basis
  • Service the bird feeders
  • sign out loaner binoculars and field guides
  • lead beginner bird walks
  • do minor trail maintenance
  • monitor new native plantings
  • have fun in a beautiful place full of birds

Volunteers have already removed a legion of exotic vegetation and created a mile and half of walking trail around this 175 acre site bordering
    botrh sides of Oak Creek.

    Volunteer
    efforts already
successfully effected the site designation as one of Arizona's first Important Bird Areas and enabled Arizona Game and Fish to seek funding to assist our efforts.

    NAAS
has already built a ramada to provide shelter for birders and other visitors as we continue to develop this location as a premier birding destination and education site.

    NOW we need
YOU to help all these people take credit for all they have accomplished.

Send us the message today that you want to help out!

Newly Threatened...

Are you a member of N. Arizona Audubon because you believe our mission, of promoting the understanding and appreciation of birds and other wildlife, and the conservation and restoration of their natural habitats is important?

Is having an active Audubon chapter in your community important to you?

If you answered yes, to these questions, and are not already actively volunteering with us, then it’s time you did. We will not survive as a chapter unless more of you, our members, do more than read this newsletter, attend our monthly meetings and participate in field trips. Just putting together those three activities requires a substantial amount of time and commitment from our Board members. If we are to have any chance of achieving our mission, we need more than just Board members doing the work.

Northern Arizona Audubon needs you!

Ways you can help:
Volunteer to show up at our monthly meetings at 6:30 to help set-up chairs and tables, or to bring refreshments.

Come have fun doing battle with Russian Olive at our Page Springs workdays. Or give reign to the Thistle Thug within, and join our Rio de Flag workdays.

Help out on a committee – you don’t need any expertise, just a willingness to learn.

Programs – Help find interesting speakers for our monthly meetings.

Education – Work with our education co-chairs on developing educational programs and other outreach opportunities to students.

Conservation – Help us stay informed on local, state & national policies and actions affecting our environment and natural habitats. This might involve reading environmental impact documents, or attending community meetings and other types of events and then sharing what you’ve learned with the rest of the Board and chapter members.

Publicity & Publications – Help us get the word out about issues of concern and chapter activities via newspapers, radio, T.V. and other media. Right now we could really use someone to help us put together a chapter brochure.

Membership – We need someone from Flagstaff to fill our Above the Rim membership chair. This entails meeting and greeting members and visitors at our monthly meetings, helping out at tabling events and doing general new member recruitment. (We even already have a committee member willing to help out at the meetings).

Habitat Restoration
We need folks who enjoy the satisfaction that comes from taking messy to neat. This includes picking up trash, removing exotic invasive plants, planting native plants as well as trail creation and maintenance. The areas we work on vary from Picture Canyon in Flagstaff to Page Springs, south of Sedona.

Fundraising – Help us find creative ways to raise the money we need to implement all the great programs our wonderful new volunteers are putting together now.

Hospitality – Help plan our social events. Right now we only have one, a party for our Birdathon teams. But with all these fun new volunteers, we’ll need to add a volunteer appreciation party in the Sedona area and another in Flagstaff.

OR...maybe you have a special skill or idea that we could use (graphic arts, marketing, or carpentry jump to mind), please don’t be shy, even if you’re not sure how you can help, give me a call and we’ll talk about ways you can help Northern Arizona Audubon make a difference and achieve our mission of promoting the understanding and appreciation of birds and other wildlife, and the conservation and restoration of their natural habitats.
